PROGRAMS OFFERED

Fully approved programs are offered in pathologic anatomy and clinical pathology. One may train in both in preparation for the general practice of pathology or specialize in either. Fellowships are available in surgical pathology, neuropathology and pediatric pathology. The integrated programs utilize the extensive teaching and diagnostic materials at University Hospital of Brooklyn, Kings County Hospital Center, the Brooklyn Veterans Affairs Hospital and the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn. The core residency program consists of rotations and staff conferences at each level of training. Anatomic Pathology provides training in autopsy pathology, surgical pathology, forensic pathology, neuropathology, cytopathology, electron microscopy and histochemistry. Clinical pathology includes training in blood banking, tissue typing, clinical chemistry, hematology and clinical microscopy, immunology, cellular immunology and serology, microbiology, parasitology, virology, laboratory management, computers and interpretive analysis of laboratory test results. Elective rotations are available at advanced levels of training. Residents interested in an academic career have the opportunity to participate in research and teaching. Active research programs currently in progress include monitoring and alteration of the immune response and immune deficiencies; in vitro pancreatic carcinogenesis; macrophage physiology and the membrane role in phagocytosis; protein synthesis; viral protein distribution histocytochemical detection of steroid receptors; molecular pathology; instrumentative biophysics; computer assisted instruction, artificial intelligence and interpretive reporting.

TYPES AND NUMBERS OF APPOINTMENTS

There are 21 pathology residencies and fellowships.

FACILITIES

Our facilities include approximately 2400 beds at the three hospitals. The laboratories are staffed by faculty members of the Department of Pathology of SUNY HSCB. The clinical material is voluminous, challenging, and reflects the diversity of our hospitals and environment. It is provided by a large transplant and renal dialysis program; medical, surgical, gynecological and radiation oncology services; large addictive disease and AIDS patient units for clinical investigation, a Sickle Cell Disease Center and inner city residents afflicted with an unimaginable array of diseases. In addition, our full time medical examiners perform about 1900 forensic autopsies at KCHC annually. The department maintains electron microscopy facilities and research laboratories in the Basic Sciences Building, University Hospital of Brooklyn, and the Brooklyn Veterans Affairs Hospital. The HSCB library is one of the largest medical libraries in the United States and features extensive computer facilities.

COMMUNITY

The enormous number and variety of cultural, recreational and educational opportunities available in New York City are well known.
